Hey Blue Collar Boss,
Every once in a while, we get a call that starts like this:
“Why are my ads not running? I just Googled my keyword and it says they’re off.”
And almost every time… the ads are running just fine.
Here’s what’s really happening.
When you have access to your Google Ads account and you search your own keyword, Google sometimes shows a summary card at the very top of the page. Big. Obvious. Hard to miss.
Inside that card, it might show an old campaign that was paused months ago. And right there in bold letters it says, “Your ads aren’t running.” Then it gives you a friendly little button to “Resume.”
You can see how that spirals fast.
Now you’re wondering if your marketing company forgot to turn something on.
Or if you’re being billed for nothing.
Or if the phone should be ringing more than it is.
Or if you’re being billed for nothing.
Or if the phone should be ringing more than it is.
But here’s the truth.
Most of the time, those campaigns were paused on purpose.
Maybe they were bringing in junk leads.
Maybe they were too expensive for that service.
Maybe they were tied to a location you no longer serve.
Maybe they were too expensive for that service.
Maybe they were tied to a location you no longer serve.
Meanwhile, your actual performing campaigns, the ones driving real calls and booked jobs, are active and doing their job.
Google just isn’t highlighting those.
And here’s the part most contractors do not realize.
Google makes most money on the first 6 inches of the Search results. So if their system thinks showing that summary card increases the chances someone clicks “Resume,” and starts the Ad Spend on poor campaigns, it’s going to show it.
That button is not there by accident.
This is why communication with your marketing company matters.
If that card shows up and you want it gone, here’s what you can do:
• Click the three vertical dots in the top right of the card
• Select the option to hide or remove it
• Select the option to hide or remove it
That removes it from the search results page when it appears.
Simple. But if no one ever told you about it, it feels like a five-alarm fire.
This is exactly why we believe contractors should not just “have someone running ads.” You need a partner who explains what is happening behind the scenes. Who tells you why campaigns are paused. Who walks you through what to expect before it surprises you.
Because confusion leads to doubt.
And doubt kills trust.
Blue Collar Boss, if you ever feel unsure about what you are seeing in your ad account, ask questions. A good agency will welcome that. They will not dodge it.
And if you want a second set of eyes on your Google Ads setup, we are always happy to take a look.
