Hey Blue Collar Boss,
We recently looked through a plumbing company’s Google Ads account and found something that made us stop.
They were spending over $8,000 a month on ads. The campaign was generating clicks. The reports looked fine.
But when we dug into the actual search terms, we found they were paying for people searching things like “plumbing apprenticeship,” “DIY drain cleaning,” and “plumbing parts.”
People who were never going to call and book a job.
The frustrating part?
This wasn’t a small mistake hidden in the account.
It was happening every single month.
And we see versions of this same problem all the time with home service companies.
Google Ads can be one of the best sources of new customers for a plumber, but only if your budget is being protected from the searches, settings, and clicks that drain your money without producing jobs.
Here are a few things we always check when reviewing a plumbing Google Ads campaign.
1. Your Campaign Might Be Paying for People Who Were Never Going to Hire You
This is one of the biggest issues we see.
A plumbing company is bidding on broad keywords because they want more leads.
Sounds logical.
But broad targeting can bring in searches from people looking for:
- “plumbing jobs”
- “how to fix a water heater yourself”
- “plumber salary”
- “free plumbing advice”
- “parts and supplies”
These searches might generate clicks, but they rarely generate customers.
A properly managed campaign constantly adds negative keywords to block wasted searches.
This is one of the easiest ways to protect your budget, and it is something that should happen every single week.
2. Your Best Keywords Are Not Always the Ones With the Most Search Volume
A lot of businesses chase high-volume keywords.
But in plumbing, the highest-volume search is not always the most valuable.
For example:
“plumber near me”
can bring traffic from all kinds of situations.
But searches like:
- “emergency water heater replacement”
- “sewer line repair company”
- “burst pipe repair”
usually show stronger buying intent.
The goal is not getting the most clicks.
The goal is finding the searches that are most likely to turn into a profitable job.
3. Your Location Targeting Could Be Sending Your Budget Outside Your Service Area
This one surprises a lot of owners.
Google Ads location settings can be tricky.
Many campaigns are set to target a city or service area, but Google can still show ads to people who are outside that area because they showed “interest” in the location.
That means your plumbing company could be paying for clicks from someone who lives 50 miles away.
For service businesses, this matters.
You have a truck, a crew, and a realistic service radius.
Your ads should respect that.
4. Your Phone Calls Are Probably Not Being Tracked Correctly
Here’s a question we ask every plumbing company:
“Which Google Ads campaign generated your last booked job?”
A surprising number cannot answer.
They know how much they spend.
They know how many clicks they got.
But they don’t know which keywords and ads actually created revenue.
That is a problem.
Because a $100 click that turns into a $5,000 repipe job is completely different from a $20 click that creates nothing.
Without proper call tracking and conversion tracking, you are making decisions with incomplete information.
5. Increasing Your Budget Does Not Fix a Broken Campaign
This is probably the biggest misconception we see.
A plumbing company says:
“We need more leads, so we’re going to increase our Google Ads budget.”
But if the campaign is already wasting money, increasing the budget just makes you waste money faster.
Before scaling, you need to know:
- Are you bidding on the right searches?
- Are your ads matching customer intent?
- Are your landing pages converting?
- Are you tracking actual booked calls?
Fix the foundation first.
Then increase the investment.
That is how you turn Google Ads into a predictable growth channel instead of another monthly expense.
At True Blue Collar, we help plumbing companies do exactly this.
We look beyond clicks and impressions and focus on the things that actually matter:
More qualified calls. More booked jobs. A marketing system you can actually understand. If you are running Google Ads right now, we’re happy to take a quick look and tell you where there might be opportunities or wasted spend.
No complicated report. No sales pitch. Just a second set of eyes from people who work with home service businesses every day.
