Hey Blue Collar Boss,
Here’s an uncomfortable question.
What actually happens when your marketing works?
A homeowner searches for an emergency plumber.
They see your ad. They call. Your phone rings. And rings. And rings.
That’s no longer a marketing problem.
That’s an operations problem.
And throwing more money into Google Ads won’t fix it.
The Lead Is Only Half the Job
A lot of home service companies spend most of their energy asking:
“How do we get more leads?”
Sometimes that’s the wrong question.
The better question is:
“What are we doing with the leads we already paid for?”
Take a hard look at what happens from the second somebody calls your business.
How quickly does somebody answer?
What happens when nobody does?
Does the person answering sound like they actually want the job?
Are they trying to book the appointment, or just answering questions?
Does someone follow up with the homeowner who said, “Let me think about it”?
Those little operational details can make a massive difference in what your marketing is actually worth.
Listen to Your Own Calls
This is one of the simplest things a home service owner can do.
Pull a handful of calls from Google Ads, Local Services Ads, SEO, or your Google Business Profile.
Then listen.
Not as the owner who knows how the company works.
Listen as the homeowner who has a leaking pipe, a dead AC system, or water coming through the ceiling.
Would you book with your company?
You may hear things you don’t like.
Long holds.
Flat greetings.
No urgency.
No attempt to lock in an appointment.
Someone giving a price over the phone and letting the homeowner disappear.
A good lead can die in less than two minutes.
Before You Buy More Leads, Fix the Leaks
Marketing and operations can’t live in separate boxes.
If you’re paying to make the phone ring, you should also know:
Who answers it.
How quickly they answer it.
What they say.
Whether the call turns into a booked job.
That’s where marketing ROI becomes real.
Before increasing your ad budget this month, listen to ten calls.
You might find the next growth opportunity isn’t inside Google Ads at all.
It might be sitting right next to the phone.
